About Chandler, Arizona

Chandler Arizona PhotoHigh-Tech Oasis: Chandler, Arizona

Chandler, Arizona is a great place for living, working and playing. With a population of over 240,000 and counting, Chandler is one of the nation’s fastest growing communities. Chandler has grown from a farming community to one that has attracted some of the largest names in the tech industry. The city prides itself as being the “High-Tech Oasis in the Silicon Desert”.

Charming traditions and festivals make Chandler a unique and interesting place. Back in 1957, residents gathered tumbleweeds from around the town and created the first annual Tumbleweed Christmas Tree. This Chandler tradition starts with between fifteen hundred to two thousand tumbleweeds attached to a thirty five foot wire cone. Next workers spray on white paint, flame retardant and glitter. Strings of lights are hung and the citizens gather for an annual tree lighting ceremony.

In November, balloonists and balloon enthusiasts come to town to take part in the Arizona Balloon Festival. This three day event includes balloon glows, early morning balloon launches, hot air balloon races, music, entertainment, arts and crafts, parachutists and an evening of fireworks. Tickets are inexpensive and benefit local charities.

Another charming festival is the Ostrich Festival held in Spring at Tumbleweed Park. Ostrich races are held several times a day along with continuous entertainment on two stages, a carnival style midway, hundreds of exhibits, food vendors serving up Ostrich Burgers, and children’s activities. Get that small town feeling by enjoying the Ostrich Festival Parade featuring marching bands, floats and performers.

The arts are alive and well in Chandler. The Chandler Center for the Arts opened in 1989 and has grown into a major venue attracting performers from around the globe. Easily accessible, the center offers performances for any taste and any budget.

Chandler’s own orchestra, the non-profit San Marcos Symphony, holds concerts for the public free of charge. The symphony is an ensemble of volunteer musicians dedicated to their art.

The city operates four libraries, five swimming pools, three spray parks, over fifty parks including a skate park, two recreation centers, and a senior center.

Take in some drag racing at the Firebird International Speedway. The speedway offers a full schedule of professional racing events as well as legal street racing on Friday and Saturday nights.

Kids of all ages find the Arizona Railway Museum a fascinating place to explore. The museum is free and open on weekends. Tours are available during the week by appointment.

Downtown Chandler’s Historic District is home to Arizona’s first golf resort, the San Marcos, which opened in 1912. The San Marcos Resort is the crown jewel in a lovely and vibrant downtown. The area’s storefronts have been carefully restored to their turn of the century splendor.

With the birth of Arizona golf right here in Chandler, it’s only natural to expect great golfing. If Chandler’s nine courses aren’t enough, hop on over to nearby Scottsdale for a choice of over two hundred more.

The Chandler School District is dedicated to producing lifelong learners and responsible citizens. The district’s students consistently score among the highest in Arizona on the college entrance exam. Both the U.S. Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Education have cited the school district for excellence. The district serves over 31,000 students in its three high schools, three junior high schools, twenty three elementary schools and one K-8 school.

Chandler’s average household income is about $71,000 per year. Employers such as Intel, Ryobi, Motorola, and Microchip Technology create high paying jobs and contribute to a robust economy. With growth expected to continue, now is a great time to invest in housing and real estate. Coupled with affordable housing, high-tech jobs, award winning schools, and fantastic area attractions, Chandler has become Arizona’s rising star.
